From dumb pipe to intelligence platform: our CEO in RFID Journal

Our co-founder and CEO Aleksandr Moskotin has written an Expert View for RFID Journal on a question every operator board is asking: how does a network stop being a “dumb pipe” and become a source of new revenue?

The problem

Telecom keeps growing slowly while earning less per customer. PwC projects global telecom service revenue to reach $1.32 trillion by 2029, at a 2.8% compound annual growth rate. Over the same period, mobile ARPU is expected to slip from $6.32 in 2024 to $6.20. Operators carry more traffic and more investment for less money per subscriber.

The playbook in three steps

1. Recognize the asset. A network produces signals no one else has: location, device behavior and usage patterns. They are collected with consent and verified by the network itself, so they cannot be spoofed. Few data sources in advertising or finance can say the same.

2. Build the architecture. CDRs, OSS/BSS, DPI and location data have to meet in one pipeline. The machine learning runs inside the operator’s environment and works with pseudonymous tokens, so subscriber PII never leaves the perimeter.

3. Operationalize revenue. The operator does not sell raw data. It runs targeted offers through SMS, RCS or in-app channels and gets paid on CPA or revenue share.

Proof the model works

Vodafone Analytics and Orange Business are already monetizing network intelligence for enterprise clients. Across 20+ operators in 35+ countries, afina’s partners see ARPU increases of up to 5%.

As Aleksandr puts it in the piece, the pipe was never dumb. It just wasn’t being asked the right questions.
